Paktia Pakistan

This was my last trip into Afghanistan and as strange as it sounds, I took the bus to a village in Pakistan near the border. It was the only time I travelled with another photographer. He was from Steamboat Springs and had seen an ad I had placed in News Photographer, the magazine of the National Press Photographers Association.

The small ad highlighted the death threat made by the Soviet Ambassador to Pakistan against western photographers who thinking of entering Afghanistan illegally.

The bus was stop along the way and we removed and questioned by a man who I assumed was Pakistan intelligence and asked where we were going. It was illegal westerns to travel in the tribal of Pakistan. I hedged for a moment, and he repeated the question. I said Afghanistan and he said have a nice trip.

We were met at the bus station and began the trek into the region of Afghanistan that Osama bin Laden soon would fight his first battle against the Soviet Union.
